There comes a point in life when you feel alone and realize it is not because you are physically alone. It is because you have become disconnected from yourself.
No one can do that work for us. People can support us, but the journey of finding ourselves is one we must take alone. Some of the loneliest moments in life happen while trying to understand who we really are.
Yet we often forget that everyone around us is carrying their own loneliness. We become so focused on our goals, growth, success, family, and future that we fail to see the silent struggles of others.
As we grow older, we tend to make fewer new friends. Maybe that is one reason loneliness becomes more visible with age. When the chase for the next achievement slows down, we are often left alone with ourselves.
One day all of us will leave this world. Maybe tomorrow, maybe years from now. In the end, people may not remember what we achieved as much as they remember how we made them feel.
But there is another truth. We are not responsible for making others happy at the expense of our own well-being. We have a responsibility to be kind, to avoid causing harm and to treat others with respect.. to not make people feel like trash. Others have the same responsibility toward us.
Perhaps the balance is this: care about others without losing yourself, and care about yourself without forgetting others.
