Why do we work? I had this conversation with someone at work today. Not really about work but it also touched on that question. But even after the conversation even now that question lingers in my mind.
Why do we work? I will try to give an answer.
Primarily it is for the salary. I absolutely would not do this job if I was not being paid. So let us leave that aside because I don’t think anyone intends to do a corporate job unpaid. But what is there beyond the salary and the job we hold.
People, yes people. I go to the office and work because of the people I work with. I absolutely love them. I am not saying this because some of the people at my current work are also connected with me here on LinkedIn. No I don’t need to do that. They are all grownups. I absolutely love working with them.
I have loved everyone I worked with in my life except for maybe a few that I can count using my fingers and toes. That is ok looking at all the amazing people I have and continue working with.
People are not made to work with us. Their dream job is not working with us 😁. We are nothing special. But yes, we got to work with others. It is about our work life. Yes, our work life. So yes it is the people that make me work where I work. Ofcourse after that salary 😜
So I get paid and I love the people I work with.
Then it is about the work I do. I love doing what I do. I am not saying it for the heck of it. Since I am paid this is the work I absolutely want to do.
There is a painful road, some success, lots of lame ego, couple of deceits, marvelous stupidity and tons of unforgettable failures to reach where I am now and I will tell that all some day.
If I don’t get paid I will do many other things. I will write poems more than what I do now. I will read more than I do now, I will make videos more than what I do now. I will write more. I will just talk to strangers, I will go back to college, I will teach for free and I will do many many other things.
But I get paid and I am happy with my pay and I don’t want to trade places for any other job.
Do I have the perfect job? I don’t know. There is nothing called perfect. I just love the moment. The ‘NOW’ is NICE“. And there is so much I don’t know and my work challenges me.
So I get paid and I love the people I work with and I love what I do.
Then it is about opportunity. And opportunity does not come when everything goes well. Opportunity comes when there is room for improvement. Yes, I work in a place where my leaders think we can do better as a group and they also think I can do better than what I do now. They push me towards better.
So. Why do we work ? Yes for a salary. But beyond that. What is it ? Let me know in the comments. Or just write about it in your diary. Don’t share. Just for you.
There are no right or wrong answers only honest answers from honest people 🥰
Regards
Vinod!
