Sometimes I wonder whether I am making progress or simply becoming better at being busy.
Every Thursday I will post something. The image will drive the post and it will be my Throwback Thursday moment. Sometimes the image will have some connections sometimes it wont have.
I know this is not Facebook… it is LinkedIn.. but I am still human and I have emotions. And I bleed and breathe… I will talk about work but I will do it like a simple imperfect human and not like another corporate junkie who will never make a mistake and yet would have lost their self to some vanity.
Lately, I have been reflecting on how easy it is to confuse being busy with making meaningful progress. A calendar full of meetings, status updates, escalation calls, and constant follow-ups can make us feel productive. Yet sometimes, despite all the activity, we end the day wondering what actually moved forward.
The reality is that most of us spend a significant part of our lives at work. Meaningful work does not always come from having fewer responsibilities or a perfectly organized schedule. Often, it comes from finding purpose within the work we are already doing. It comes from seeing how our efforts contribute to something larger than ourselves.
I have also realized that meaningful work is rarely a solitary experience. The interactions we have with others matter deeply. Good collaboration brings clarity during uncertainty. Honest conversations help resolve challenges. Shared problem-solving creates momentum. Even difficult work becomes more fulfilling when we feel connected to the people around us and united by a common goal.
Perhaps passion at work is not something we discover once and hold on to forever. Maybe it is something we build through meaningful contributions, supportive relationships, and moments when we recognize that what we do has value for others.
Busy calendars will probably always be part of modern work. The question may not be how to eliminate the busyness, but how to ensure that within it we continue to find meaning, foster collaboration, and focus on the work that truly moves us and our organizations forward.
Because at the end of the day, progress is not just about getting more done. It is about doing work that matters alongside people who help us become better.
My posting on LinkedIn is in a way part of my trying to find meaning.. The image is of me and my son some 17 years ago… I was young… he was a baby.. I am still alive and he is an adult.. that is all that matters.
The moment in this photo matters, it is what I cherish, I don’t even know the meeting I attended that Monday or the people who were i that meeting.. the agenda.. the outcome… make work meaningful.
My workday is meaningless if I don’t make a positive difference in another person’s work life. That is all that matters at work and in life.
