85/365 Learning ABC from our Kids

When we consume content do we even bother if it is relevant, valid, true, factual, current. We are bombarded with so much content and information that it needs double the time to figure out if it is something we can rely on

Looks like the topics I have for my blog and podcast are coming from my son now. Today driving him to school I was asking him about his homework for the day. They get homework most days and have to turn it in after 2 or 3 days. And with his practice for an upcoming play (Wrinkle in Time) he is in school rehearsing till 6:30 PM. So we are trying to figure out a way to get the homework done without stressing out.

He had mentioned yesterday that today he needs to complete his English Homework. That was the conversation we had during morning drop. He said it was the ABC project. I did not know what that was, so had to ask him.

A stands for Authority, B for Bias and C for Currency. So his homework is that he has to go over few website content and see how it looks on the ABC method. Is the person writing it having an Authority on the topic, Are they biased or unbiased on the approach and if the article is current.. not sure why they call it currency.

They have to choose a topic for the research and his topic was ‘Ways to prevent drought’… now I have a doubt if it was english or science homework. Well, he will know. This conversation also gave us opportunity to chat about drought and authority and bias. It is extremely relevant today that kids need to know how they can analyze an information send to them.

As adults this is an area we fail miserably, because we want to always come up with an answer quickly… we want to consume content without thinking… we just don’t have the time to fact check or even check who is talking. On Internet everyone is an Authority and claim to be unbiased and everything they say seems to be current relevant and ready to consume blindly… Nope.. that is far far from the truth…

I did some further digging and found the method is not just ABC but ABC3 and it is Authority, Bias, Content, Currency, and Consistency. More on that some other time.

It is fun when you have to learn the ABC of the new world from your kid’s homework.

My son also writes daily now. And you can click and read his blog here

Note: Now you can listen to the audio version of my blogs on the Penpositive Outclass Podcast on Google, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Check it out and new episodes uploaded every day 4 AM Pacific Standard Time
