Is that a long journey…? in 2020 just before the pandemic broke I was at a teacher’s training institute in my home town in Kozhikode, talking to new teachers who were leaving the college that year…. and this was one of the question I had in mind. The Journey to being a teacher is what they had just completed… Now they need to travel to become a facilitator of learning?
When we start looking at teaching as a facilitation of learning I think more people will be in the profession of teaching. How can we instill the love for learning in the kids. In a changing world, how can we make the next generation and the present more adapting to change and more willing to learn new things. How can continuous learning be what they aim for…
How can we teach to people who don’t want to be taught. Won’t facilitating the learning process make that possible. Facilitation takes teaching away from sermonizing to the amazing act of exploring together. I sometimes feel this will take the burden away from both ends. The burden of teaching the uninterested from the shoulders of the teachers and the burden on students who struggle to learn what is being taught.
What would happen in facilitation (in my humble view) is that the teacher will transform to being a coach and a mentor and the students will grow to be life long learners and even future coaches and mentors even if they are not in the profession of teaching.
Even when you think about it now… the most remembered and loved teachers who get a mention in stories retold over and over again are those who have been able to step up and out of the teaching role and become coach and mentors to their students. And this also results in more learners wanting to pay it forward….
September 5th is is Teacher’s day in India. Celebrated on the birthday of the country’s former President, scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on this day in 1888.
